President's Message
Hello Fellow MTAW Members & Associates:
Fall is here and that means budget season is upon us. This year’s budgeting process has been difficult because of all the changes in the state budget that affected our municipalities including the reduction in state aids. I’m sure it has been a challenging time for all of us.
In July I had the opportunity to attend the Association of Public Treasurers of the United States and Canada (APT US&C) conference “The Will to Survive the Skill to Succeed” in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, (104 degrees in the shade). There was a survivor panel that included a woman that spoke about her severe injuries after being hit by a tornado in Oklahoma, a gentleman on missionary assignment when the devastating earthquakes hit Haiti, and the City of Oklahoma’s Planning Director discussed the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building. Another speaker was Steve Hewitt. He was the City Administrator for Greensburg, Kansas when a tornado came through and destroyed the city in 2007.
However, the most inspiring session was the key note speaker, Todd Huston, who gave a very inspirational talk about overcoming challenges. In one week he lost his wife, his house and his job. But Todd overcame all these challenges in his life and completed the world record-setting Summit America by climbing the highest elevations of all 50 states and shattering the original record by 35 days! Oh, I forgot to mention, he only has one leg. I just finished reading Todd’s book, “More than Mountains: The Todd Huston Story”. What an amazing person!
All these people have overcome unimaginable challenges in their lives and have survived. While the challenges we are facing in our lives may not be the same, with strength and perseverance we will all survive.
The fall conference “Is There a Doctor in the House” was a great success. Thank you to our conference committee (John Schlice, Renee Roemhild, Sue Stoik, Xenia Ramos, and Lori Peternell) for all their hard work planning a terrific conference. Also, Nurse Morse did an excellent job on the hospitality suite!
Congratulations to Kayla Burt (C. River Falls), Connie Gurtner (C. Colby), Veronica Heenan (T. Oakland), and Marie Williams (C. Delafield) on obtaining their CMTW. Congratulations to Sheila Meyer (V. Grantsburg) and Sheila Tate (C. Rice Lake) on receiving their first re-certifications. Also, congratulations to everyone that graduated
from the UWGB Treasurers Institute or the Treasurers Completion Course in July. Great job everyone!
Are you working on your certification or re-certification and need points? Have you considered serving on a committee? I will be making committee appointments at the spring conference in April. If you are interested in serving MTAW please contact me.
Have an enjoyable Thanksgiving!
